'Perfect' is a word I don't like to sling around, especially when it comes to movies. But RONIN comes close to being a perfect action espionage thriller.

Judging from the lack of chatter I take it no one was particularly impressed by Syfy's recent ALICE?

Just found out that my recent breathing problems is a result of a severe iron deficiency (which is doctor-ese for plain ol' anemia) which is a relief, believe it or not since I was fearing it was dat pesky ol' embolism actin' up again.

I liked Jolene Blalock more in the two hours of STARSHIP TROOPERS 3 than I did in the whole five years of ENTERPRISE.

I’ve been having some weird dreams lately. In one of them I co-starred in a 70’s style cop show with Colin Farrell and D.M.C. of Run-D.M.C. where we worked undercover in Hell’s Kitchen. And if that wasn’t bizarre enough, Nicole Sullivan was our boss. In the other dream, Patricia was mad at me about something and to get her to talk to me I got my neighbors to sing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” on our street. Pretty elaborate dream that one, with costumes and everything.

Who’s the better actor: Nicholas Cage or Val Kilmer?

    Adventures in 2010
Life is magical... but full of pain.

The Jets are in the playoffs. Who woulda thunk it, a couple of weeks ago? The game against the Bengals was certainly impressive. Can they do it again, though? We'll see.

The Giants didn't play. I don't know who those guys in their unis were, but they sure were inept.

Goodbye, Bill Sheridan. A good guy, by all reports, but a horrendous defensive coordinator.

I meant to post yesterday on the weekend's games, but got busy writing instead, and finished a Tyrion chapter that I've been struggling with for six months. Nibbling away at that knot. We'll see if the finished chapter holds up to reread and polish today.

    Monday Market Miscellany
We're only four days down into the new year, and one of my resolutions has already been rendered undoable. Thus the gods make mockery of the determinations of men. Or, y'know, something to that effect. And it's not like Catherine Gardner is making me feel any better about things, what with having a story ("Dead Sharp Tail" over at Jersey Devil Press-go read it)already published this year and all.
    Ah well.
Besides disappointment and envy, the new year has also brought a new market...Bumble Jacket Miscellany. No pay save a contributor's copy, but there is a contest where renumeration is possible.
I know, not the usual market mentioned here, but the editor and I have a history. Things. I owe-ah-certain one could say, 'favors'. Because of events. Happenings. Occurences. One occurence.
    ...
    There was a badger.
    ...
I kid. I kid because I care. Seriously, go ahead and submit something. If you do, I might just tell you about the badger.

    PLAYOFFS, BABY!

There'll be my annual 'thoughts on the season' post later this week....but seeing my Jets literally take apart the Bengals with their bare hands, all I can think is that under Coach Ryan, we might finally get something to talk about in our team's history besides Super Bowl Three.

    See you all in Cincinnati!

    Better In The Dark #72

    Episode Seventy-Two: TRANSPORTING MR. ROMERO

It started out as a simple episode examining the career of George Romero by looking at some non-zombie movies in his canon. But before it's done, the Boys Outta Brooklyn will find themselves engaging in the first--and maybe last--edition of Better In The Dark Fight Night, featuring a selection of action movie stars...and Tom Savini. Plus Derrick tells us why Wes Craven deserves a daily kick in the ass, Tom has fun with public domain blaxploitation films, and gratuitous Kristen Bell (It wouldn't be an episode without gratuitous Kristen Bell, right?). This is one of the weirdest--and maybe funniest--episodes in the podcast's history, so get to clicking!

BETTER IN THE DARK Kicks You In The Ass!
In one of our strangest episodes, a discussion of the non-zombie films of George Romero somehow transforms into a discussion of the concrete-chewing exploits of a major action star and the first edition of Better In The Dark Night At The Fights....

    Too Much Catnip

I hope everyone has fully recovered from their New Years festivities. I'm still working on it.

Hey, for those living in Vancouver, this is for you: I will be having some art pieces (one of which is the previous post on this here LJ) in an upcoming show at the Ayden Gallery. The opening is on Friday Jan. 8th. It starts at 7 and goes to 11. The Ayden is in Tinsel Town Mall on the second level. There are a lot of great artists in the show and I hope to see you there so we can boog-ga-loo until our hips unglue.

    On the Drawing Table

Been taking a week break from drawing in order to complete two websites for friends, and well, here’s what it looks like as I’m finally getting into the code and layout for the second one (spent yesterday working on the embedded gallery itself) :

    Code!

While I learned the basics of php and obtained a firmer grasp or CSS (style sheets) putting together my wordpress site, I’d actually forgotten a lot, so setting these two sites — the first that needed a video gallery and could be updated by the client and the second that needs a photogallery that can not only be easily updated but also sorted and categorized and would automatically add new pages, links, etc  for new galleries — has been a wonderful refresher. I’ve finally almost memorized the CSS code (which isn’t all that much, frankly, but enough to be a pain if you’re constantly having to look up variables), and instead of tweaking the php and seeing what happens, I’m finally beginning to UNDERSTAND it. I’ve also been dabbling in XML and Flash Action Script. Of them all, the action script is the easiest to understand but honestly, the hardest to change because I still don’t quite understand how it’s all put together.

The gallery I’ve been using is a neat bit of code called Simpleviewer Pro. I wouldn’t embed it directly into a website because it’s pretty rough around the edges, but it’s enough to springboard from and customize to your own design. And it’s clean. No whizzing, whirling gadgets. Just enough to provide a basic function and make it better. :)

It’s a good thing this came along, though. A friend of mine who owes me … quite a bit of money … called me up the week after Christmas to tell me he wouldn’t be able to pay me until next month. Oh joy! And me needing to still make the rest of rent! So it’s nose in work until I finish and hopefully find more work because I need to think of next month if he delays again. :\

    COMICS STUFF:

It’s a constant struggle trying to keep ahead just enough to make the bills every month and maintaining enough time to work on my comics. It’s frustrating. I don’t have someone who will catch the bills when I need that extra month, but like many who’ve sung this song before, eventually I’ll learn to balance it on my own.

Or at least enough to get back into the loop. I’ve been out of the comics loop for the last three years now, doing just this juggling act. You think you’ve saved up enough to take time to work on a project. Money runs out too fast (and I don’t spend it on anything beyond the necessities and occasional book, but the necessities add up) and projects get moved to the sidelines. Getting back into stride again after a working sabbatical is no easy task.

But I’ll keep my chin up, look straight ahead, and just keep going. I love writing and illustrating comics. I love writing my novels. There’s nothing I’d rather do. And there’s so MUCH that’s just a month or two needed from completion.

And the horrible true? I’ve never actually been entirely self-sufficient as a comics creator. My first two books were completed because 1) my best friend was supporting me for a year and 2) my parents let me live with them for a year. Since I’ve struck out on my own, I’ve had nothing to show other than piles of art and manuscripts accumulating on my desk, screaming for that last chapter, that last edit, to be done.

I know I’ll make it back in again. Just because I’d hit a low doesn’t mean I still can’t fly. And hey. I’m in the right place to do so. :) I’m confident in how my abilities as both an artist and a writer have come over the last three years, and I’m eager to show it to the world.

    Now, back to work.

    I am not....
I am not writing New Year resolutions :) I just promise to myself to do my best in any way I can.

    I promise to....

“Try to have the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

New Year celebration was wonderful... just home with family and kids, peaceful, cozy - just like I wanted :)

Two more days and I am back to work.... so I am trying to enjoy my free time to the fullest....

And how was your New Year?

On the other hand - cant get today to my  email for some reason,  will have to send a trouble ticket to my provider, so for now  I can be slower than usual with replies....

In an effort to support the Heroes Fanfic Community as a whole and to promote the many underrated DC Websites out there, which get sometimes overwhelmed in the flood of Mutants and Gamma-spawned monstrosities, JLU: 2001, DC Anthology, DCInfinity, DC Legends and Faux DC have banded together to offer an alternative. Check out all the great Fanfic set in a DC Universe! Links at Left...

    Now...

    Go! Read! Enjoy!

JLU: 2001, Vertigo: Subculture and Wildstorm are always taking proposals, so if you have a desire to come over to the other side send us your ideas.

And remember, if you like what you see, let us know. Our writers try really hard to give everyone some entertainment, so if you like a story- or even if you don't- drop 'em a line, write a review or just let them know that you read it...

And Happy Holidays from all of us here at JLU: 2001!

    Thanks...

    Uhm...is this a joke?

Antonio Sabado Jr and Traci Lords in Princess of Mars...uhm...when I heard that a movie was being made, I had higher hopes that some big name talent would be attached.

    ...I'd still probably watch it...

There is also supposedly a Disney based production somewhere behind this one in scheduling.

Is the John Carter: Warlord of Mars stuff out of copyright so that anyone can pick it up and do with it as they will? Or did a sharing of the rights occur somehow?

    Ten Statements About....SHERLOCK HOLMES

    1) As nervous as I was about the way the trailers portrayed Robert Downey's Holmes, I am glad that Jude Law's portrayal of Watson reclaims the character from the intelligence drain Nigel Bruce put on him. John Watson in the Doyle stories was a military man who was very physical and intelligent in his own right, and Law captures that version to a t.

    2) There is never anything wrong with Rachel MacAdams in a white blouse, suspenders, clunky high-heeled boots and tight tweed trousers. Nothing.

    3) Downey's version of the character is not as 'Action Holmes' as I feared, but does have his own strange quirkiness. There is a definite echo of Tony Stark in Downey's Holmes, but he does manage to spin the detective in a unique direction.

    4) I give the script points for making a decided effort to place this adventure at a very specific point in Holmes' career. The presence of certain characters anchors the story and gives it a bit more gravitas.

    5) Mark Strong's villain, Lord Blackwood, is pretty much a generic bad guy...until you realize he's not the real bad guy...and the real bad guy contributes to grounding the story in the Doyle continuity.

    6) Even though the film flirts strongly with supernatural and psychic phenomenon, I was relieved to find that the ultimate solution is grounded in plain ol' regular science. Granted, it's Steampunk-y science--but since I'm a steampunk freak, I'm good with that. However...

    7) ...even though we get a scene where Holmes explains how all the supernatural elements were nothing more than 'conjurer's tricks,' and even though director Guy Ritchie takes pains to show us each of the 'clues' that Sherlock picked up, there's still a strong feeling that the film isn't interested in playing fair with its mystery.

    8) The way Ritchie does this thing where he walks us through Holmes' thoughts as he is in combat, then rewinds to show us the same scene in real time is fascinating, and thankfully is only done a handful of times, being gone before it gets old.

    9) I rather like Hans Zimmer's score, which seems to only use instruments that are contemporary to the time.

    10) Even though it does move at a fair clip, there is a point about midway through where the film just draaaaaags. Maybe if Ritchie had shaved fifteen, twenty minutes off its running time it might have flowed better.

In short...there's a lot to like here, but I don't know if it's the kind of thing that will generate the sort of buzz Warner Brothers hoped it would.

Incidentally, there was an endless stream of trailers before the film, including ones for Iron Man 2 (and yes, the moment where Tony and Rhodey are back to back and lower their faceplates as one still makes me squeal like a little girl), Date Night (a more-promising-than-I-expected action comedy featuring Tina Fey and Steve Carrell--although the funniest line in the trailer comes from a skanked-out Mila Kunis), the Kevin Smith directed Cop Out (Bruce Willis and Sean William-Scott? What's not to love?) and an absolutely ludicrious looking film called Season of The Witch, where Nicolas Cage tries to convince us he's a 12th Century Templar--but it's a sign of goodness being rewarded when you see that Ron Perlman gets second billing.

But the trailers paled next to walking into the Regal Atlas and being confronted with one of those massive oversized displays that's half-poster, half-standee for a film called When In Rome that featured a ten foot tall picture of the beloved Kristen Bell smiling and biting one nail. I actually considered asking the manager to put that display aside for me once they were done to it...but then common sense kicked in and I realized just how creepy I would come off if I did so.

(Oh...and lemme just ask--Who brings a squalling infant into a two-hour plus movie? Do people really that little sense in their lives?)
